My hometown of Detroit has had a streak of bad luck as of late, with the auto industry reveling in high gas prices, dealing with 10% unemployment (the highest in the nation) and a mayor tangled in a scandal that's choking the last breath out of the city.
As if things couldn't get any worse, with the final twist of the dagger, my beloved Tiger Stadium is getting the wreaking ball. After years of political squabbling, one rescue/redevelopmment plan after another, the almost 100 year old american classic is being demolished.
Truly a sad day, not only for the city of Detroit but for our country and it's history. Tiger stadium was tied for the the oldest park in major league baseball with Fenway Park, followed closely by Wrigley Field. Imagine the controversy if either of those parks were going to be destroyed, imagine the outcry to save the past. The biggest problem for Tiger stadium is that it's located in Detroit, nobody in this country cares about the problems facing Detroit, let alone notices that we are losing a piece of our history. I'm going there for a visit next week, where I'll see the carnage first hand. Reminded of why I'm going to miss this place and what made it so special, the bleacher creatures, the wave, and the only 2 dollar beer in a 12 oz dixie cup on the planet!
It's a sad day indeed.
